What sounded like a crazy idea to quit a lucrative job as a Sales Representative at a start-up in San Francisco to travel the world turned out to have a silver lining for Kathryn Rucker.
After visiting 10+ countries in Europe and Southeast Asia throughout 2019, Kathryn decided she wanted to continue traveling by building her own online sources of income. She started with a few freelancing jobs that she found through Upwork before finally putting her sales skills to the test to start her own business at 24 years old.
Within just 6 months of starting Rucker Sales Consulting, she was able to close over $20,000 in new business working as a sales consultant for start-ups across the United States. As she grew her business in 2021, she would go on to close over $250,000 of new business on behalf of her clients.
The most intriguing part of Kathryn’s story is that she did not just travel for fun rather that she had a strategic plan in place. She knew how to leverage her sales skills to earn her first few clients and she knew that other young professionals might be interested in doing the same.
“When I started traveling, most of the people who were able to live this lifestyle were either engineers, YouTubers, or some other kind of content creator. I wanted to show others that you can travel regardless of what your skill set is, which is why I started my personal finance blog Cash for Kat,” says Kathryn Rucker, founder of Rucker Sales Consulting.
Through her blog, Kathryn teaches others how to get started freelancing and leverage that experience into starting their own business. She also documents how she grew her own business and provides tips on how to increase sales.
Kathryn currently runs her business and her blog from Phnom Penh, Cambodia. As of 2022, she is on course to make more money from her business than she did while working in San Francisco.
