If you want to know about Jean Ribault, This will be the best website for you where you can get detailed information about Jean Ribault such as Where was Jean Ribault born, Who Was Jean Ribault, etc.
Jean Ribault began his naval career as a young man, rising to prominence and becoming one of the most trusted officers to serve under Admiral Gaspard de Coligny. In 1558 Rebout was commander of a French supply ship in the successful capture of Calais from the English, and the following year he sailed to Scotland, overseeing French interests within the nation.
Ribault was appointed commander of an expedition designed to find a French colony in Florida in 1562. Early that spring he sailed from France in three ships with about 150 colonists, and on May 1 they landed near the mouth of St. John’s. Rivers in Florida. Ribault claimed lands for France but marched north at the word of Port Royal, which he named and founded Charlesfort. He returned to France on July 20, 1562. The French religious war prevented him from bringing fresh supplies to Charlesfort, and the colonists there soon left the settlement.
Ribault was finally released from prison by Queen Elizabeth I. In 1565, Admiral Coligny sent him with seven ships to fortify the newly established Huguenot settlement of Fort Caroline on the St. Johns River. The Spanish government of Philip II, with Florida’s claim, ordered Pedro Menendez de Aviles to destroy the French colony. After an overland expedition from his settlement in St. Augustine, Menendez finally succeeded in capturing Fort Caroline and captured Reboot when a storm scattered Reboot’s fleet and carried its flagship to shore.
Jean Ribault came to the New World to search for a location to establish the Huguenot colony. The purpose of these colonies was to provide a sanctuary for the Huguenots to live and escape the brutal persecution in France. He was involved in the formation and management of two early colonies in America. These were Fort Carolina and Charlesfort. These two colonies were located in what is now known as Florida and South Carolina.
